'Fifty Shades' trilogy leading Amazon's 2012 chart

The three erotic Fifty Shades novels, published 2011-2012, outperformed The Hunger Games trilogy, published 2008-2010.

The chart places Suzanne Collins's three Hunger Games books in fourth, fifth and sixth, with the boxed set in eighth.

Fifty Shades' own boxed set appears in ninth place and the first four of seven Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin are bundled in tenth, being the books upon which TV's Game of Thrones is based.

Tom Rath's career advice tome StrengthsFinder 2.0, a popular guide that provides an alternative to, or a companion for, the annually updated What Color Is Your Parachute?, is the sole non-fiction entry in the half-year top ten.

The next highest personal improvement book is Thinking, Fast and Slow (13th) followed by The Power of Habit (19th).

Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest is down in 43rd, and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight novels, which inspired Fifty Shades, lie outside the top 100.

In e-books, The Hunger Games trilogy enjoyed even greater success, lodging positions two, three and four.

2008 paperback release The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks is in eighth, following its April 2012 film adaptation, while Jennifer Probst's February 2012 release The Marriage Bargain gets a foothold in ninth.
